Partner Spotlight- Teen Memberships at the Y
The Exeter Area YMCA has been a partner since we first launched the #areuin? card program in 2017. We are grateful for their partnership and all they offer to #areuin? families and the greater community. You can learn more about our partnership here. We sat down with Reid Van Keulen, Interim CEO, to discuss the Teen Y Membership.
KEY Collective: Can you describe the teen programs available to #areuin? card members at the Y?
Reid Van Keulen: Our Teen Y Membership provides youth with access to our facility seven days a week, offering a convenient bus stop for Exeter High School students to be dropped off after school. The facility features fitness equipment, a basketball gym, wellness studios, and spaces for socializing and relaxation. Additionally, we offer a free after-school snack station for members aged 18 and under. Members 12 and older are welcome to use the facility independently after completing a youth orientation.
KC: What are the main goals or outcomes you hope teens achieve?
RVK: Our main goal is to provide teens with a supportive and inclusive environment where they can develop a sense of community, stay physically active, and build meaningful social connections. We strive to create a welcoming space that encourages personal growth, fosters friendships, and promotes overall well-being. By offering diverse activities and opportunities for engagement, we aim to help teens build confidence, develop healthy habits, and feel a strong sense of belonging.
KC: What types of activities and experiences do teens participate in at the Y?
RVK: Teens have access to a variety of activities and experiences designed to keep them engaged, active, and socially connected. They can participate in sports such as basketball, volleyball, soccer, etc. in the gymnasium, providing opportunities for both casual play and friendly competition. They can also utilize the indoor track for running or walking and take advantage of our fitness equipment for individual workouts. Additionally, we offer seasonal programs that youth members can sign up for – Lego robotics club, intro to pickleball, teen nights etc.
KC: How has partnering with KEY Collective enhanced your programs?
RVK: Partnering with KEY Collective has helped expand our ability to connect with more families in the community and ensure that financial barriers do not prevent youth from participating in our programs. Through this partnership, we’ve been able to raise awareness about the financial assistance available, making it easier for families to access the support they need.
KC: Are there ways the greater community can support the programs?
RVK: The community can support our programs through financial contributions, sponsorships, and in-kind donations, ensuring all teens have access to our resources. Advocacy is also key—spreading the word through social networks, businesses, and community groups helps us reach more families in need. Partnerships with local organizations further enhance opportunities for youth, creating a stronger, more inclusive community.
KC: Is there anything else you would like more people to know?
RVK: At the Exeter Area YMCA, we’re more than just a place to work out. The Y is a place where people can connect with others, engage in fitness programming to better their mental and physical health, and strengthen the community as a whole. We offer a wide variety of programs for all ages, abilities and interests including group fitness classes, pick-up basketball, yoga, indoor cycling, personal training, weight training, open gym, and more. In addition, you can utilize any Y nationwide at no additional charge.
